How to spend a Sunday in New York
Sundays start off with no rush to get moving. We want to take advantage of the day, yes, but we want to kick off without any stress or urgency. Whether you’re in a hotel or your apartment, allow yourself to wake up when feels good, get ready at your own pace and prepare for the day.
Best treats in New York for a Sunday Morning
Start your day off at a cute coffee shop or bakery for a treat to start the day. Obviously this will depend on the neighborhood you’re in:
West Village - L’Appartment 4F, Maman, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, ad hoc, Blank Street, or Partners
Soho/LES - Butler, Blank Street, Gasoline Alley, Levain, Vesuvio, Supermoon Bakehouse
Flatiron/Gramercy/Chelsea - Bluestone Lane, Maman, Breads, Levain, Petit Chou
Upper East Side - Via Quadronno, Levain, Blank Street, Butterfield Market
Sunday morning bagels in NYC
Or for an alternate approach, you can kickoff the day with a classic Sunday bagel. Lots of people have strong opinions on the best bagel in New York. Our founder Samantha’s favorite was always Ess-a-Bagel but it became a special occasion since she lived downtown and didn’t make the trek up there often. H&H Bagels tops the list if you’re on the Upper East Side. Downtown, you often hear Murray’s Bagels which is good for the bagel sandwiches but the bagels themselves aren’t our favorite. Pop Up Bagels has been the trendy, long line spot (haven’t personally tried but heard good things) and Leon’s is in the same category. On Lower East Side, you can’t go wrong with Russ & Daughters, classic Jewish counter with the most amazing smoked Salmon. And in East Village, people rave about Tompkins Square bagels.
Sunday Brunch in New York City
Or if you’re more of a sit down girl, you can grab a seated breakfast at one of the many brunch spots in New York. We have a whole guide about our favorite brunches in New York City for you to dive into if this is your speed.
A perfect Sunday exploring Central Park
For me, there’s never a perfect Sunday in New York without Central Park. But this sprawling wonderland has a million different ways to enjoy - the park is home to numerous attractions, including the iconic Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, the picturesque Bow Bridge, and the tranquil Conservatory Garden so there’s a fit for everybody. After you’ve fueled up however works best for you, it’s time to walk, cab or subway uptown to start exploring.
Enjoying outdoor activities
Central Park is not a place to rush, it’s a place to explore and enjoy. Whether you’re bringing your coffee and treat or a bagel sandwich, you can find any bench that speaks to you or throw a blanket out and enjoy the nature. If you’re looking to walk around, Our go to route is to enter around Columbus Circle and wind northeast up toward Balto, then swing around to walk down the Promenade, check out Bethesda Terrace (Gossip Girl fans will know!!!) and then across Bow Bridge through the Bramble and eventually up towards the Met.
But the lower half of the park is always busier than the north half, so if you’re looking for more calm, try walking around the Resevoir, enjoying the gardens near the North end of the park and don’t miss Shakespeare’s garden if you’re a flower or Shakespeare fan (they feature all the flowers mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays)!
Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, affectionately known as “The Met,” is a must-visit. With its vast collection spanning thousands of years, you can easily spend hours exploring the exhibits. We love the Impressionists, the American wing and spending some quiet pause in the reconstructed temple. When the weather is good don’t miss the breathtaking rooftop garden, which offers stunning views of the city skyline.
Lines can get long at certain times of year but move quickly and anybody with NY driver’s license can get a discount!
Engaging with art and culture
New York City is a cultural epicenter, and Sundays are an excellent time to immerse yourself in its rich art scene. Beyond the Met, which many have heard of, there are a couple of museums and other cultural moments worth putting on your list for a Sunday.
The Frick: On the Upper East Side, very near the Met is my all-time favorite in New York: The Frick. A much smaller museum built into an old Gilded Age mansion, with some classic european pieces and beautiful architecture, this is a peaceful spot that I think hits all the right notes for a Sunday.
The Whitney: In Meatpacking, The Whitney is a stunning contemporary and modern museum that is both an architectural adventure to explore and full of beautiful pieces. Start at the top and work your way down and then you’ll be spit out into the heart of Meatpacking to go explore.
Exploring local art galleries: If you’re interested in contemporary art, take a stroll through the Chelsea art district. Here, you’ll find a plethora of galleries showcasing emerging artists and innovative exhibitions. Many galleries have free admission, making it a budget-friendly way to appreciate art.
Sunday window shopping in New York City
New York City is a shopping paradise, with diverse neighborhoods offering everything from luxury boutiques to quirky thrift stores.
SoHo is famous for its high-end shops and unique boutiques, making it a great destination for fashion lovers. The streets are iconic and stunning but once you’ve hit the big name spots you need to, I’d definitely recommend moving eastward into Nolita where the shops are more unique and the crowds thin out a bit.
Alternatively, head to Williamsburg in Brooklyn, where you'll find vintage shops, artisanal markets, and local designers. Both neighborhoods provide a lively atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to discover hidden gems.
Enjoy the riverside parks
If you’re looking for a more laid-back afternoon, consider heading to one of New York's riverside parks. The Hudson River Park and the East River Esplanade provide scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere. Walking down the West Side Highway in the late afternoon/evening when the sunset is crawling towards you is also a stunner and then you can duck into West Village or Tribeca for a delicious dinner once the light is waning!
